I’m asking for your help here.
A few years ago I began the task of writing a book about angels; are there any, what is their role if they exist, and if the Bible makes about 300 references to angels, why are so many of us so reluctant to speak about them and their role?
Among some of the books recommended to me on the subject by Professor Drew Gibson of Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland, was one written by evangelist Dr Billy Graham, in which he tells of an occasion when a little nine year old girl tapped on the door of a renowned medical doctor asking for help for her critically ill mother. It was late evening, but with some hesitation he followed the child to her mother’s bedside. He tended the lady and then said how impressed he was by the maturity and persistence of her young daughter, but the surprised lady said that her daughter had passed away a couple of years previously, and she pointed to a wardrobe in hung a coat belonging to the child. He recognized it as the coat the child was wearing when she called at his home.
Shortly before my late wife passed away I was doing some consultancy work for Derry City Council, and one day as I drove through the Sperrin mountains on my way to my office in the Guildhall I saw an old lady trudging along the road. It was raining, so I stopped and offered her a lift. I remember her amber coloured skin and her sharp piercing eyes, and as she asked about my life I told her of my terminally ill wife, and she repeated over and over, “God bless you.”
After a few miles she said, “Just let me out here.” There were no houses or farm lanes, but despite my offer to bring her to wherever she wanted to go, she insisted, and so I stopped, said goodbye and she said, “God bless you.” I drove off, looked in my rear-view mirror, but she had gone. I reversed back to be sure she hadn’t fallen into the ditch, but there was no sign of her. There might be a rational explanation.
I find it interesting that when I ask people do they believe there are angels, most say they don’t, but as the conversation develops, almost invariably they will refer to a strange experience in their past, and say… ‘Maybe.’
